Chapter Eighteen

Savannah

We didn’t get an appointment with my lawyer until Thursday morning, which meant every day that week I woke up to Jake asking if today was the day. The kid had never been so excited. The fact that he couldn’t wait for us to be his parents made me happy and sad at the same time. What an awful life he must have had with his mother, that he’d be so willing to accept me as his new mom. I felt even more horrible that I’d been so busy with school and work while he was growing up, I never noticed his unhappiness. Well, I definitely planned on making it up to him. From here on out, he was going to have an awesome childhood.

When the day came for us to see the lawyer, Jake was too excited to sit still during breakfast. I kept reminding him the process could take a while, but he didn’t listen. The receptionist, a middle-aged woman with light brown hair swept up into a tight bun, was more than happy to watch Jake while we went into the office. He sat behind her desk with her and proceeded to talk her ear off, telling her he was about to get new parents and a new baby brother or sister. I had to kiss him on the cheek before we went into the office. I didn’t care if he caused a scene.

Mr. Dale Denton ushered us into his office, offering us drinks, but we refused, taking seats in front of his desk. I couldn’t wait to get to business, and I suspected Cesar was just as eager. He’d paced the house all morning.

I stared outside at the reflective windows of the other high-rises as I waited for Mr. Denton to take his seat. His penthouse suite boasted spectacular views from three walls of windows. Rent had to cost a fortune, but his law firm was one of the best in town. Probably in all of Texas.

Denton shuffled a stack of papers before sitting down and fixing me with a somber expression. “I have some news. Your sister has been identified as participating in two more robberies,—Galveston and Corpus Christi gas stations nearly a year ago.” Denton pushed his glasses up his hook nose and peered at me with serpentine eyes. “She won’t be eligible for parole for at least fifteen to twenty years.” He drummed his fingers on the surface of his shiny, mahogany desk before leaning back in his cushioned leather chair.

I gaped at Denton in stunned silence. She’d pulled two more robberies a year ago? Where had Jake been when she was holding up convenience stores, and what the hell was wrong with my sister?

“Oh, wow,” I finally said, glancing at Cesar, who looked as stunned as I felt.

Denton folded his hands in front of him, smugly smiling at both of us. “With you as Jake’s only competent living relative, I don’t see the need to rush into adoption.”

“That’s not why we want to adopt him.
